1998 Macintosh Update Instructions

If you're having problems updating TaxCut from within the program, follow the instructions below to download and install the update from this location. If you haven't tried updating TaxCut by choosing Update TaxCut from the Tools menu, we recommend that you try this method first. You can also read our Update FAQs for more information.

Note: If you receive the error message, "Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site," when trying to download the update, try again later. This message means that the our ftp server is currently busy.

Help Updates
Click the appropriate link below to download the help update for your edition of TaxCut. If you purchased TaxCut on a CD-ROM, download the Deluxe help update. If you purchased TaxCut on the web, download the Basic help update.

Installing the Program Update

Download the program update. Save the file to the hard disk and remember its location. Do not save the file in the same folder that contains your Kiplinger TaxCut program files.
Close TaxCut if it's open.
If you are running anti-virus software, temporarily disable any virus protection extensions by holding down the Shift key while restarting your Macintosh.
If the Kiplinger TaxCut '98 Update folder doesn't automatically appear after you download the update, double-click the hqx file and/or the sea (self-extracting archive) icon.
Note: If your Macintosh can't find the application program that opens the update file, you need to download Stuffit Expander from http://www.aladdinsys.com.
Open the Kiplinger TaxCut '98 Update folder, and double-click the Kiplinger TaxCut '98 Update icon.
Click the Update button.
Drag the "Old Kiplinger TaxCut '98" icon, located in the Kiplinger TaxCut '98 folder, to the trash.
Open the folder titled "Move Contents into the TaxCut Sys," and drag the contents of this folder into the TaxCut Sys folder. The TaxCut Sys folder is located in the Kiplinger TaxCut '98 folder on your hard drive.

Installing the Help Update

Download the help update. Save the file to the hard disk and remember its location. Do not save the file in the same folder that contains your Kiplinger TaxCut program files.
Close TaxCut if it's open.
If the Kiplinger TaxCut '98 Update folder doesn't automatically appear after you download the update, double-click the hqx file and/or the sea (self-extracting archive) icon.
Note: If your Macintosh can't find the application program that opens the update file, you need to download Stuffit Expander from http://www.aladdinsys.com.

Complete the remaining steps to install the updates for each type of help. You must update all the help files in order for the Rapid Find feature to work properly.

Deluxe Edition users: Start with step 1 and run the installers for tchirs.98, tchkip.98, tchnwg.98, tchpub.98.
Basic Edition users: Start with step 3 and run the installers for tchirs.98, tchkip.98.

Place the TaxCut Deluxe CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
Open the TaxCut folder located on the TaxCut Deluxe CD-ROM and drag the file named tchpub.98 to the TaxCut Sys folder located on your hard drive. This file must be located in the TaxCut Sys folder on your hard drive in order to update IRS Publications.
Open the Federal Update folder.
Open the TaxCut '98 Help Update folder.
Double-click one of the help update icons, and then click the Update button. The update program creates a new help file icon. Repeat this step to install each of the other help updates.
Drag the "old" help file icons located in the TaxCut Sys folder to the trash.
Drag the contents of the folder titled "Move Contents into TaxCut Sys" to the TaxCut Sys folder located in the Kiplinger TaxCut '98 folder on your hard drive.
